This study is for Grade 5 and 6 (Stage 3) in the Science: Earth and Space Sciences.

The theme for the topic is: “Sudden geological changes or extreme weather conditions can affect Earth’s surface (ACSSU096).As part of the Australian Curriculum science achievement standard, the class will follow procedures to“develop questions and design investigations into simple cause and effect relationships” (ACARA, 2011). By the end of this unit students will be able to explain how natural events cause rapid change to the Earth’s surface.

Also included in the outcomes are general capabilities which are integrated and interconnected set of skills. For this topic this includes:

Literacy– to understand, interpret and analyse information and ideas. To investigate major geological events such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and Tsunamis in Australia and around the world.

Numeracy– to interpret data, including identifying trends and patterns from information and graphs. Using this data to make a grid to locate geological events on the Earth’s surface. Recognising that earthquakes can cause tsunamis.
Information and Communion technology (ICT) –is using ICT to access information (using search engines); collect; analyse and represent data by using ICT effectively to record and share ideas.

Critical and creative thinking – to think and evaluate knowledge, clarify concepts, consider alternatives and implications and to assist in natural disaster management ot minise both long and short-term effects.

Personal and social – by using scientific knowledge students can make informed choices about issues that impact their lives and environmental change. Considering the effect of drought on living and non-living things in the environment.

Based on Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) materials.
